Some movies break ground for their whole genre. For example, sci-fi has blossomed after Star Wars. I hope this movie will do the same to Fantasy. I hope that it shows once and for all the huge difference between fantasy and fairy-tale - something that Hollywood and people in general tend to miss, probably largely due to Disney productions.
Producers now have to compare to a higher standard. Peter Jackson has raised the bar. The misconception that fantasy means "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" has been broken forever, I hope.
Fellowship is undoubtedly the greatest fantasy movie of all time. Best movie tout court? I'm not qualified to answer. What I can tell is that it is the movie I've liked the most in my life, and the only one movie that I've seen twice at the cinema. The flaws are so few and so irrelevant, that they are quickly forgotten when the next breathtaking scene comes.
I read people calling this the worst movie of all time, and I can't help wondering why, what are they thinking. Because I understand that many just don't like fantasy, and many others just like to say the opposite of whatever the consensus is. Most likely, this isn't the greatest movie in history. I've lost all trust in Academy Awards after Titanic, but I find that I'd have a hard time saying that a movie with 13 nominations is worse than, I dunno, Dungeons and Dragons: the Movie (to keep it in the same genre. a movie which is clearly and objectively inferior in all respects from acting to plot to CGI. Certainly, refusing to recognize any value at all to LOTR:FOTR, to the point of "I gave it a 1 just because there's no 0" just sounds childish. Oh. my vote? 10/10.
